There is a pretty good chance Ari Engel, a 14-year old surfer from La Jolla California, surfs way more than you. In 2017, Ari surfed 509 times. That’s at least one, two, sometimes three times a day. Ari surfs before and after school, no matter what the conditions. Mostly surfing the La Jolla Reefs, good conditions and quality waves are usually the daily commute. When catching up with Ari, he gave us a few words of advice on surfing to your maximum potential: “The more you surf the better you get. Be prepared for crazy things to happen like breaking boards, stepping on nails and stingray tags. Get good gear like warm wetsuits and sunscreen. Make sure to sleep a lot and eat tacos after you surf (RIP Bull Taco). Mostly, just have fun and enjoy the time in the water.”
Ari, a freshman at Torrey Pines High School is working his way to achieve his goal of winning a WQS Finals and beating his record of 509 surf sessions in one year. “I’m going for 550 in 2018”. Keep an eye out for this dedicated ripper. Chances are, you’ll see him in the water.
